Also known as Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome and Visual Stress, Irlen Syndrome, which is estimated to affect approximately 14% of the population, is a spectrum condition which impacts the ability of the brain to process light.
This can cause debilitating symptoms, such as print and environmental distortions, migraines, anxiety, restlessness and fatigue.
Often poorly understood, overlooked or mistaken as dyslexia and ADHD, Irlen Syndrome can present itself as a stand-alone disorder, as well as coexisting with other conditions.
Irlen Syndrome is a hereditary condition, which can also be acquired through traumatic brain injury.
It often runs in family to varying degrees of severity and it is not uncommon for family members to experience some or all the symptoms.
